Manitoba Fitness Council is the CSEP bronze Certified Affiliate in Manitoba. As a CSEP Affiliate, we work together with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) to support CSEP professionals and advance the profession of qualified fitness providers.

CSEP is the Gold Standard in Exercise Science and Personal Training. It is the resource for translating advances in exercise science research into the promotion of fitness performance and health outcomes for Canadians. CSEP sets the highest standards for qualified exercise professionals through evidence-based practice and certification.

Founded in 1967, CSEP is a community of like-minded individuals who recognize the need and importance of exercise and health for everyone. CSEP’s over 5000 members generate outstanding evidence-based research and include the most highly qualified exercise professionals.
CSEP proudly supports Exercise is Medicine® Canada (EIMC) and their work to bring regulated health care professionals and exercise professionals together as part of the movement to change the way healthcare is delivered and chronic disease is prevented and managed in Canada. EIMC advocates for physical activity as a ‘vital sign’ and that exercise be a critical part of the prescription for healthy active living.

CSEP Professional Standards Program: Certifications

Certifications are the core of the CSEP Professional Standards Program: CSEP Certified Personal Trainer® (CSEP-CPT) and CSEP Certified Exercise Physiologist® (CSEP-CEP). CSEP’s standardized core competencies, written and practical exams, continued professional development and renewal requirements ensure CSEP’s certified members’ knowledge and skills align with cutting-edge research in exercise science, physiology, health and fitness.

The scope of practice (SOP) differs between CSEP-CPTs and CSEP-CEPs. A CSEP-CPT works with apparently healthy individuals or those with a stable health condition, between the ages of 15-59, who are able to exercise independently. The CSEP-CEP performs various health and fitness assessments, prescribes and supervises exercise programs, provides counseling and health lifestyle education to a broader population, including those with chronic conditions. For more information on the SOP of the CSEP certified members, please consult

CSEP certified exercise professionals work with high-performance athletes, emergency service personnel, those with chronic health conditions and the general public.
